The auctioneer glanced over an eager crowd before him; surveying their faces, deciding on whether this was the right audience for the next item. Satisfied, he motioned his assistant to the stage with his charge.
"Ladies and gentlemen. Our next item is a unique and unusual specimen. Perhaps you may recall a legend from the Westlands detailing a creature known for attacking and mutilating domestic fowl; hardly witnessed, but it's all too familiar wailing has been heard throughout the wilds of the Westlands. We have for you today, a taxidermied specimen acquired from an anonymous collector. Accompanying it is a page from a journal we are told, belonged to naturalist and explorer, Miss Isabella Blackthorn."
"It reads thusly: 'Tuesday, sixth of September 1836. I've survived today I think, but just by a hair. My travels took me deep into the Westlands where the rare sun lily is reputed to grow along the borders of deciduous forests. I did not find the lily today, but another rare specimen did find me. I truly wish now, that it hadn't. The villagers had warned me of the creature, but none could describe it for me save for a distinct territorial wailing that it would emit prior to a possible attack. They enthusiastically suggested that I not explore the woodland until the winter months when the creature seemed to disappear for migration or hibernation.' "
"'I believe I have found the legendary Beast of Holly Vale. Correction: it has found me. It reminds me greatly of the vicious snakehead fish known for attacking most anything near it that moves, despite size differences. It would appear that I was no exception and after a painful screech, it lunged at me from the underbrush."
"Normally, I have full confidence in the defense that my trusty ray-gun, Leviathan, has provided me in the past. I still don't know whether I may purely have missed my mark repeatedly or my gun, which has stunned large ungulates, has failed me with a creature as small and strange as this. I believe I must have fired at the beast no less than 15 times before it finally collapsed dead. Another oddity to note, Leviathan was made only to stun sometimes rather large animals to ease my studies up close, but never has it killed anything. I shall have to take this specimen to Arthur to preserve. I have no doubt that he will will be shocked by its appearance as I am. Its limbs look almost human, but in miniature. Its skin colour is pale and fleshy but its texture is coarse, much like an elephant's pelt. And stranger still, it bears a lizard-like head and tail, long digits and teeth that might put a pirana to shame. This abomination cannot be a creature of God. I am beginning to suspect that perhaps, the rumors of the eccentric Dr. Milwood's activities might have some truth to them after all. Such a possibility terrifies me to no end.' "
"And there ends the journal entry." The auctioneer handed the aging sheet back to his assistant. "Shall we start the bid at 10 pounds?"
